Juan Martín will play for the first time in the semifinals of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel, presented by HSBC

Acapulco, Guerrero, March 1st .- Juan Martin del Potro endorsed his position as one of the favorites to stay with the championshiop of Abierto Mexicano Telcel, presented by HSBC in its XXV anniversary, after defeating Dominic Thiem,(champion of 2016’s edition) with a score of 6-2 and 7-6 (7).

“I’m happy to reach my first semifinal in Acapulco, I had ups and downs in the second set and he took advantage of it very well, it was a great match, especially the second set was complicated, but in the last points I could win”, celebrated the Argentine

Next he will face Alexander Zverev. In theprevious match between them, the victory corresponded to Delpo (Masters of Shanghai 2017), who is  also playing its second semifinal of the season, after the one in Auckland. In 2017 La Torre de Tandil succumbed in the second round to Novak Djokovic.

“The match tomorrow I see it more difficult, it is a complicated picture, it is rare to play against a top ten in the quarterfinals in an ATP 500 and even more so in a semifinal I touch you with Zverev, that speaks of the good level of the tournament” he explained.

Surprisingly Del Potro, sixth seed, had an easy first round more than expected. Thiem, third favorite, resisted the attacks of Juan Martín.

In the following part an early break was enough for the Argentinean to walk calmly, despite the fact that Thiem didn´t gave up his serve.

Del Potro passed the test and came to serve for the game with the score 5-4. With a big turn and an error by Delpo, Thiem put it 0-30. At the next point Juan Martin sent the ball down the baseline to give away three break points to the Austrian, who missed the first, but not the next to level the score to five games per side when Del Potro crashed the ball into the net .

The fans were happy because that meant the match would go on. And the second set had to be defined in the tie break. In a give and take of breaks Thiem had the opportunity to send the match to the third, but Del Potro recovered and with a double fault was eliminated from the tournament
