Raúl Zurutuza highlights the most special main draw in history

  • The tournament’s director, Raúl Zurutuza, confirms that the XXIX edition presents the best main draw in the history in Acapulco
  • Prior to the start of the tournament, there have been positive feedback from players

In the main draw ceremony, the director of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC,, Raúl Zurutuza, said joyfully about the beginning the XXIX edition “We will do very well, we will leave the bar high for when we turn 30 years, next year. The team is going to be at full capacity,  and the most important part starts on Monday when we open doors. There is high expectations, but we are very happy. The audience has responded incredibly and we have sold all the tickets.”

He also confirmed to the media that for him, this it is the best main draw in the history of the Tournament “Yes, I think so. I don’t remember having so many Top 10 in the tournament, but also several Top 20 and several Top 30. We have a very special and important draw and I hope this will be repeated many more times.”

Talking about the first impressions of the players who arrived in Acapulco for the premiere of the new headquarters, Arena GNP Seguros, and who already tried some of the new courts, commented “I want to thank ATP that supported raising awareness among the players. It has been a major effort, the player feedback has been positive, they have been sympathetic to the situation.”

He also highlighted the good comments from Daniil Medvedev, who will make his debut in the Mexican ATP 500 “He is happy, there has been no complaints. He’s been training every day at the stadium. He’s having a great time. He is the No. 2 of the world and has this additional opportunity of becoming the No. 1 of the world.”

Finally, he mentioned “There is no tournament I would not want to have Rafa [Rafael]. Rafa has been part of the history of our tournament. In 2005, an 18-year-old boy was given a wild card. The other players are very important as well, we have a great draw, very competitive. The top part of the draw is tough. It will be a successful tournament.”
