  • In his third participation in Acapulco, the Canadian advanced for the first time to the quarterfinals. His next opponent will be the American Learner Tien.

Canadian tennis player Denis Shapovalov (No.32 ATP and ninth seed of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC) advanced to the third round in Acapulco, after defeating American Alex Michelsen (No.34) 6-4, 6-3 in a match of 1 hour and 24 minutes, for his seventh victory of the season.

This is the first time that Shapovalov has reached the quarterfinals of the Mexican tournament. In his previous participations, in 2023 and 2018, he had remained in the second round of the tournament. His next opponent will be the American Marcos Giron in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, German Alexander Zverev, world number two and first favorite of the tournament, was eliminated at the hands of American Learner Tien (No.83) by a score of 3-6, 4-6 in 1 hour and 28 minutes.

Tien’s next opponent will be Tomas Machac (No. 25), who defeated German Daniel Altmaier (No.76) by 7-6(3), 6-1. For Learner Tien it is the first time he plays in the Mexican tournament and coming from the qualification round he has already made it to the top eight.

Denmark’s Holger Rune, world No. 13 and fourth seed of the tournament, withdrew from the competition due to stomach problems when he was down 3-0 in the first set. This is the first time Rune has been knocked out in the second round; in the two previous editions he had reached at least the semifinals.
