- The German tennis player was knocked out of the tournament in the second round after losing to Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic
Acapulco, February 25, 2026.- German tennis player Alexander Zverev, the tournament’s top seed and world number four, was eliminated from the Telcel Mexican Open presented by HSBC by Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic (No. 84) with a score of 6-3, (3)6-7, 7-6(4), this being the second time that “Sasha” has been knocked out in the round of 16 in Acapulco, after winning the title in the 2021 edition.
Kecmanovic took advantage of Zverev’s 34 unforced errors to clinch the match with a tiebreak in the third set, after the Serbian took the lead by winning the first set; however, the German evened the score in the second set.
With this result, Zverev bids farewell to Acapulco after a two-hour, 35-minute duel, while Kecmanovic will face France’s Terence Atmane in the quarterfinals.
Cobolli advances to the quarterfinals
Italy’s Flavio Cobolli, No. 20 in the ATP PIF Rankings and fifth seed in the tournament, secured his place in the quarterfinals by defeating Czech Dalibor Svercina (No. 123) 6-4, 6-4.
These two players had never faced each other before on the ATP professional circuit, and for Cobolli, this is his best performance in Acapulco, surpassing his 2024 result, where he reached the round of 16.
“I love playing in Mexico. I’ve been coming here for three years now. The Mexican fans bring a lot of color to the court and on social media. I’m very happy with the match I played. I don’t know who I’ll be playing next, but I’m sure it will be a tough match. It doesn’t matter what my opponent’s ranking is,” said Cobolli.
In another match of the day, Spain’s Rafael Jódar was eliminated from the tournament after losing 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 to France’s Terence Atmane (No. 163). The Madrid native lost the first set by committing 14 unforced errors and leaving many balls in the net. However, in the second set, the Spanish player recovered, but he was unable to overcome the Frenchman in the third set, who showed his power with his left hand.
With this victory, Atmane, ranked 63rd in the world, advanced to the quarterfinals in Acapulco, his best performance in Mexico so far, as in the 2024 edition, he had been eliminated in the first round of the tournament.
