The Olympic champion surprised by a qualifier

Acapulco, Guerrero, February 28, 2018. The Olympic champion of Rio de Janeiro 2016, Mónica Puig had a difficult match against the Swedish Rebecca Peterson, whom won her in two, 6-1 and 6-4.

During the match, Peterson scored eight aces, with first service effectiveness of 87 percent.

Rebecca´s WTA ranking is 139 and she entered the main draw through the qualis.

This was the first confrontation between both tennis players.

Monica with a slight advantage of 3-2 on the set, it started to complicate because she could not break her rival’s serve and when trying to finish the points quickly and commit unforced errors.

Peterson broke Puig in the ninth game of the second set and took advantage of 5-4, with her service she closed the match.

On the previous round Monica faced Dayana Yastremska, while Peterson faced Alize Corne, sixth seed of the tournament.

This is the fourth time that Mónica has played in Acapulco and she will still play in the doubles tournament with her partner Sloane Stephens.

Rebecca will now face Shuai Zhang in the quarterfinals, who won over Jil Teichmann, 7-6 6-4 in 87 minutes match.
