Acapulco, Guerrero, March 3rd .- Juan Martín del Potro the new king of Abierto Mexicano Telcel, presented by HSBC. The Argentine conquered his first crown in Acapulco, with a victory over Kevin Anderson in straight sets (6-4, 6-4).
Delpo confirmed his dominance over the South African, before whom he had a 6-0 record. All the victories were in hard court.
Anderson played his third final of the season, after New York (where he won) and Pune; and second in this tournament. In 2014 he lost against Grigor Dimitrov.
For Juan Martín its his first title of the year and the twenty-first of his career. The most recent was in Stockholm, in 2017.
“From the beginning until the end it has been an incredible week. I had luck during the tournament and fortunately I was able to win it”, said excited Del Potro.
On his way to the final, he defeated two top ten players, Alexander Zverev (5) and Dominic Thiem (6), also he left out the 4 times champion David Ferrer.
Del Potro had more resources than Anderson, who like Alexander Zverev the day before, had to be treated for a discomfort in the left knee during the game.
The match was even until the seventh game. Juan Martín used his slice to define the points. After that he only had to maintain his service to win the first set.
Anderson slipped during the third game of the second set, when he tried to reach a ball of the Argentinean. He got up without problems, but after playing two more points he asked for medical assistance, and upon returning to the game he suffered the first break of his serve. For the fourth game he came out with a bandage on his left knee.
During the second set, Del Potro improved the percentage of his first serve and headed towards victory. Anderson did not have any break opportunities and missed the chance to win for the second time this year.
