Haddad surprises and leaves Stephens out

Acapulco, Gro., 27 de febrero.- .Beatriz Haddad Maia surprises and eliminates the great favorite and 2016 champion of the tournament, Sloane Stephens.

Haddad, who played the qualification tournament, won against a Top Ten (no. 4 in the world) player, being this the best outcome in her career so far.

“It was a difficult match, she played really well today. She was more consistent. After I lost the first, I knew I had to adjust my game and keep playing, but it wasn’t a good day”, Stephens stated.

Haddad Maia, admitted that she struggled to close the match, “I was a little nervous, I failed some of the backhand and I knew she could take advantage of it, but I regained my energy when I saw my time and played the point more relaxed to finally win the match”.

Stephens seemed out of her game, she looked insecure when returning Beatriz’s service.

The 22-year-old player looked very confident and took a spot in the quarterfinals of AMT. She end up having 75% effectiveness with her first service and one ace , while her rival couldn’t connect any direct service.

Stephens, looked angry with the result, but said she would like to come back next year. For now she will go to Indian Wells and Miami, where she won last year.

In other results, Donna Vekić, defeated Christina McHale in two sets (6-4, 7-5). Vekic, no. 28 of the WTA ranking, is playing for the first time in Acapulco, while Stephens played semifinals last year.

On court 2, Sasai Zheng defeated Timea Babos in three sets, the score was 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. They have face each other twice, with a 2-0 record.
