Frances Tiafoe: The beginning of it all.

  • American tennis player made it to Top 10 but doesn’t forget his roots.
  • Boasts three ATP titles and two US Open semifinals

Mexico City, January 15, 2025.- ‘Big Foe’, as one of the greatest American talents of recent years is known, has American talent of recent years, returns to the Abierto Mexicano de Tennis presented by HSBC  to enjoy one of his favorite destinations on the tour, Acapulco.

His parents emigrated from Sierra Leone in the 1990s and after fleeing the civil war eventually settled in Maryland. There the father of the family, Constant, also known as Frances Sr., found work in the construction department of the Junior Tennis Championship Center in College Park, where Junior Tennis Championship Center in College Park, MD and later took over the club’s maintenance.

His father has recalled that stage of life “When I started that job, it was a big problem because I couldn’t afford a babysitter, so I had to take the children to school. I couldn’t afford a babysitter, so I had to take the kids to work. It was an automatic thing, they had to play tennis because that’s all they saw, they had to be good.”

Frances has a twin brother named Franklin and along with him she started playing tennisfrom the age of three. But when Frances was nine, her father stopped taking on him, as he realized that his son’s level was already superior “I practically played with him until he was nine. And he was losing. So from then on I decided to let him be. His level was no longer for me. For us as a family, tennis has been a blessing. It’s beyond the ordinary what Frances is doing now.”

There is no doubt that Big Foe is going through the best years of her career, defeating Rafael Nadal en route to her first U.S. Open semifinals. Rafael Nadal en route to his first U.S. Open semifinals in 2023 to become the first American since Roddick in 2006 to do so. In the 2024 edition he repeated the same instance where he lost in five sets to fellow American Taylor Fritz.

His father also recalls “Believe it or not, the other kids’ parents would say to me. ‘Listen, your son is playing serious tennis'”.
