Tiafoe beats Muller to reach round of 16 at Acapulco

  • The American, seeded seventh, eliminated Muller, who was a finalist at the ATP 500 in Rio de Janeiro.

Acapulco, February 25, 2025.- American Frances Tiafoe, ranked 18th in the world, defeated Frenchman Alexandre Muller to advance to the round of 16 of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC.

Tiafoe took advantage of the fact that Muller (No. 41) had reached the final of the ATP 500 in Rio de Janeiro last Sunday.

Tiafoe trailed 1-3 in the first set, tied it 3-3 and eventually came from behind to win 6-4. In the second set, Tiafoe put the win on track with two breaks to make it 4-1 and then clinched the set 6-2. 

In the doubles tournament, Tomas Machac and Jakub Mensik of the Czech Republic defeated Americans Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram 7-5, 7-5, while Christian Harrison and Evan King of the United States beat compatriot Ben Shelton and Australian Rinky Hijikata 7-6(2), 6-2.

In other matches, Italy’s Mattia Bellucci and Flavio Cobolli lost to France’s Sadio Doumba and Fabien Reboul 4-6, 6-3, 10-4, while Mexico’s Santiago Gonzalez and Austria’s Lucas Miedler defeated top seeds Horacio Zeballos of Argentina and Jackson Withrow of the United States 7-6(1), 6-4.
