Davidovich-Fokina enters quarterfinals in Acapulco

  • The Spaniard won in three sets against Frances Tiafoe, the seventh seeded American.

Acapulco, February 26, 2025.- Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina (No.48) advanced to the quarterfinals of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC by defeating American Frances Tiafoe (No. 18) 6-3, 6-7 (8), 6-3.

It was the Spaniard’s tenth win of the season and he produced it in two and a half hours of play.

In the first set, Fokina looked very settled and moving well to break Tiafoe’s serve in the fourth game and that was the difference in the set, as the Spaniard defended his serve five times, while Tiafoe held his serve three times.

In the second set both broke each other’s serve and reached 3-3. In the seventh game Davidovich-Fokina went ahead and then served for 5-3, but Tiafoe reacted and defended his serve and then broke the Spaniard for 5-5. 

In the definition of the set, Davidovich-Fokina broke Tiafoe again and served for the match but Tiafoe broke Tiafoe’s serve for 6-6 and then resolved the tie break to go to the third set in which the Spaniard won 6-3.

Davidovich-Fokina will face Mexican Rodrigo Pacheco in the quarterfinals, who advanced after his opponent, Norwegian Casper Ruud, withdrew.

Mexicans advance in doubles

Mexico’s Miguel Angel Reyes Varela and India’s Sriram Balaji defeated Belgium’s Sander Gille and Poland’s Jan Zielinski 6-4, 6-2 and advanced to the quarterfinals.

The other Mexican Hans Hach Verdugo and American JJ Tracy beat Sweden’s Andre Goransson and Dutchman Sem Verbeek 3-6, 6-3, 10-8.

Meanwhile, Austria’s Alexander Erles and Germany’s Constantin Frantzen defeated Uruguay’s Ariel Behar and American Robert Galloway by 6-3, 4-6, 10-5.
