  • Shapo’ had never beaten American Marcos Giron and had never advanced past the second round at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC.

Acapulco, February 27, 2025.- Canadian tennis player Denis Shapovalov (No. 32), the ninth seed of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC, advanced to the semifinals of the tournament after defeating American Marcos Giron (No. 52) by 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, reaching for the first time the round of the best four in Acapulco.

In his two previous participations in Mexico -2023 and 2018-, “Shapo”, as he is known by the public, reached the second round; however, now he settled in the prelude to the final and tomorrow he will seek to reach his second final of the year.

Denis came from behind and turned the match around after losing the first set, where Giron had no forced errors and took advantage of his game at the net. However, the Californian could not maintain his advantage in the second and third sets and ended up falling to the powerful service of the Canadian.

With this result, Shapovalov achieved his first victory against Marcos Giron, since in two previous matches between these two players, the American had dominated the Canadian in Adelaide and Houston.

Meanwhile, Mexican tennis player Santiago Gonzalez, together with his doubles partner Lucas Miedler from Austria, lost 3-6, 4-6 to Austrians Constantin Frantzen and Alexander Erler.

Frantzen and Erler had a very good precision with their serve, serving three ace serves, despite committing four double faults, thus dismissing Santi Gonzalez from the Mexican tournament, where he had already been finalist in the 2024 edition.

“The truth is that I am sad for not being able to advance today, they were better than us, they surpassed us in power, they served very strong, but we will come back, there is still Santiago for many more years. We have to turn the page, this tournament left me a lot of joy and the matches I played the people always supported me. I am happy for the support and I will come back next year”, assured the player from Veracruz.

In another result, Americans Christian Harrison and Evan King defeated Hugo Nys, from Monaco, and Edouard Roger Vasselin, from France, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
