  • Brandon Nakashima made it into the top four of the tournament after knocking out David Goffin.
  • In the Grandstand, fellow American Learner Tien could not continue his dream week after being eliminated by Czech Tomas Machac.

Acapulco, February 27, 2025.- Two Americans opened the fourth day of activities at the GNP Seguros Arena, but only one managed to place among the top four players of the XXXII edition of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC.

In the stadium, Brandon Nakashima required two hours and two minutes of match to eliminate the Belgian David Goffin, who in Acapulco found again his best version in months. In two sets 7-6(4), 6-2, the seventh representative of the United States showed his solid serve with 12 aces to advance against the world No. 63. Although he started the match losing his serve, both broke on three occasions, so it was decided in a tiebreak where Nakashima had four mini breaks.

It was his first ATP 500 quarterfinal match and now he will face a tough challenge against one of the most outstanding players of the week, Tomas Machac.

In the Grandstand, Machac ended in one hour 38 minutes the dream of Learner Tien, who surprised Alexander Zverev in the round of 16 for the biggest victory of his career. Despite having a lower percentage of effectiveness (57%) in his first serve, the Czech defeated the 19-year-old American tennis revelation 6-3, 7-5. It was the first meeting between the current No. 25 in the PIF ATP Rankings and the junior from the qualifiers.

He lost his serve four times during the 43-minute first set and for the second set he was only able to break his opponent once to extend the match to 5-5. Learner Tien arrived in Acapulco as No. 83 in the world, but with his performance through to the quarterfinals he will move into the Top 70 ranking. While Machac is looking for his second ATP Tour final after Geneva in 2024.
