  • Only once have Davidovich-Fokina and Machac faced each other, with a positive balance for the Czech, who defeated him last year at the Shanghai Masters.

Acapulco, February 28, 2025 – In his first participation in Acapulco, Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina, world number 48, will seek the first title of his career by advancing to the final of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC after defeating Canadian Denis Shapovalov (No.38) 7-6 (3), 7-6 (1).

His opponent in the final will be Tomas Machac, with whom he has only met once, with a positive balance for the Czech, who defeated the Iberian in the first round of the Shanghai Masters in 2024.

In the first set, ‘Shapo’ started dominating the Spaniard until he had it at 4-1, however, Davidovich broke the Canadian’s serve and from there the Spaniard came from behind to take the set in a tie break taking advantage of his opponent’s mistakes.

With this result, Foki -as he is known in his country- will be looking for his first ATP Tour title, he has never won a championship before. In his career he has reached two finals, the most recent one he lost a few days ago in Delray Beach and the first one was the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 in 2022.

On his way to the final, the Spaniard eliminated Italian Mattia Bellucci in the first round, later left out of the tournament American Frances Tiafoe and in the quarterfinals he beat Mexican Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez.

“I am very happy for this week in which the [Mexican] public has supported me a lot, I am excited for the final and the key has been the constancy to be. I was able to recover in the second set to be able to get this victory,” he said.

The AMT doubles final is ready

The doubles final of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC will be contested by the American duo of Evan King and Christian Harrison against the French duo of Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul.
