Frances Tiafoe, one of the favorites of the Mexican public, returns to Acapulco for the eighth time

  • This Tuesday, January 20, the Maryland-born tennis player turns 28. He is a player known for combining sports with community service.
  • His coach for the 2026 season will be American Todd Martin.

Mexico City, January 19, 2026.- The “Big Foe” will return once again to the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC, marking his eighth appearance at the Acapulco tournament, at the height and maturity of his career as a professional tennis player, but also dedicating sufficient time to the altruistic activities that characterize him.

At 28 years old, which he turns on January 20, and having become one of the best American tennis players today, we will see Frances Tiafoe once again in Mexico, where he has given us his charisma and demonstrated his human qualities.

Tiafoe is a player who combines sports with supporting and serving his community through altruistic activities, such as the one he organized last Christmas, where he hosted a gathering at the Adventist Community Center in Beltsville, Maryland.

Together with his girlfriend, fellow tennis player Ayan Broomfield, they decided to organize a bazaar with community donations for those who needed a little support during the holiday season.

One of the darlings of the Mexican public

Without a doubt, Tiafoe is one of the most eagerly awaited players at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC by Mexican fans, because he combines his unique style on the court, his athleticism, his charisma, and his connection with the public.

“Big Foe” is a regular guest in Acapulco. He first participated in the Mexican tournament in 2017, becoming one of the favorites and darlings of the competition from the very beginning.

A new season

Tiafoe’s 2026 campaign began a few days ago at the ATP 250 in Brisbane, Australia. In the first round, he defeated local player Aleksandar Vukic, but in the second round, he lost to Russia’s Daniil Medvedev. Now, he will be looking to perform well in the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open.

In 2025, Tiafoe performed well on clay, his favorite surface, reaching the final of the ATP tournament in Houston, which he lost. He also made it to the quarterfinals of Roland Garros, losing at that stage to Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti. However, he lacked consistency on other surfaces, a situation he will seek to reverse in the upcoming season, where he will aim to win his fourth trophy on the ATP Tour.

A new beginning for Tiafoe

At the end of last year, Frances Tiafoe made two important changes to his team. After a year, American David Witt stepped down as his coach, and former Argentine tennis player Jordi Arconada also left the team after five years of working with the Maryland native.

His new coach for the 2026 season will be American Todd Martin.
