- “Sasha’s” opponent in the round of 16 will be Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic
Acapulco, February 24, 2026.- German tennis player Alexander Zverev, world number four and top seed at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC, advanced without complications to the second round of the tournament in Acapulco, defeating France’s Corentin Moutet (No. 35) 6-2, 6-4.
Zverev took the first set in less than 40 minutes, largely thanks to his serve, hitting five aces (reaching speeds of 216 kilometers per hour) and breaking his opponent’s serve twice. In the second set, Moutet recovered, but he could do little against “Sasha’s” great performance with his two-handed backhand and the consistency of his play near the net.
This was the third time the German and French players had faced each other on the ATP Tour, with “Sasha” holding a positive record, having beaten him twice in 2025.
“It wasn’t easy (the match), he hit several drop shots and that style of tennis isn’t easy, but when I had the chance, I closed out the match. Acapulco is not an easy place to play due to the conditions, but I feel I’m playing well,” Zverev said at a post-match press conference.
With this result, the 2021 champion advances smoothly to the second round of the tournament and is on track to fight for the title.
Now, Zverev’s opponent in the round of 16 will be Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic (No. 84), whom Alexander has faced three times, with two wins for the German and one for the Serbian; however, their last match was almost three years ago.
Casper Ruud eliminated from the Mexican Open
The runner-up in the 2024 tournament, Norwegian’s Casper Ruud, world number 12 and third seed in this edition of the competition, was eliminated 7-6(2), 7-6(1) in his debut in Acapulco against China’s Yibing Wu (No. 142), who came through qualifying.
This is the second time Wu has defeated a Top-15 player in his career, having previously done so in 2023 when he beat Taylor Fritz, then ranked No. 8 in the world, in Dallas.
Yibing Wu’s next opponent, who has been the big surprise of the tournament so far, will be Japan’s Sho Shimabukuro (No. 130), who defeated France’s Adrian Mannarino (No. 51).
