“We are very happy with this edition as we have several important announcements and new experiences for fans. But above all, we are ready to welcome these great players, including four tennis players in the Top 10: Zverev, Musseti, De Miñaur, champion in 2023 and 2024, and Shelton, a figure that few tournaments in the world can boast,” said Álvaro Falla, CEO of Mextenis and tournament director.

Germany’s Zverev will be looking to return to the final for the third time after losing to Nick Kyrgios in 2019 and winning the title against Stefanos Tsitsipas two years later in 2021.

Italy’s Mussetti, who reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, returns looking to add to the two titles he won in 2022. After breaking into the world’s top five, his goal is to add to his list of achievements.

Australia’s De Miñaur, who also boasts a strong showing in the first Grand Slam of the year at home and was a two-time champion in Acapulco in 2023 and 2024, has 10 titles in his career (the last one in Washington in 2025).

Rounding out the Top 10 is 23-year-old Ben Shelton, who won his first Masters 1000 in Canada in 2025, has three ATP titles to his name, and started the season on a high note after reaching the quarterfinals in Australia.

For his part, Norway’s Ruud won the Madrid Masters 1000 in 2025 and was a finalist in 2024 at the Acapulco and Los Cabos tournaments.

Meanwhile, Spain’s Davidovich Fokina, a finalist in 2025 in Acapulco, where he lost to Tomas Machac, will be back in search of his first title on the circuit after three finals last year.

Italy’s Flavio Cobolli, 23, returns after winning his first two ATP titles in 2025, and another local favorite, American Frances Tiafoe, will also be present.

The list of players and their alternates promises a week of high-level competition and entertainment at the GNP Seguros Arena. In addition, the AMT welcomed its new sponsor, Stanley. “We are confident that their products will connect very well with the fans and that this partnership will greatly enhance the experience they have at the complex,” said Falla.

Among the new features for this edition of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC is a Coaches’ Congress to be held from February 23 to 25 with leading figures such as Nicolás Pereira, Leonardo Lavalle, Edgar Giffenig, David Witt, and Pedro Clar. In addition, there is a project that is a source of great pride for Mextenis.

This is Cantera CONADE, a project in conjunction with the organization and the Mexican Tennis Federation to support the development of young talents between the ages of 14 and 16. On this occasion, within the framework of the tournament, a selection process will be held for the pre-world championship to be held in April in Canada.

In addition, the schedule of activities has been expanded to offer more opportunities for families to get together and meet the players, including the presence of Argentina’s Juan Martín del Potro, the 2018 champion, who will be the event’s ambassador and will participate in activities with the public.

The traditional Kids Day is a must before the start of the main draw, along with Trote por Acapulco, a 5 km run with Adidas in support of the Construyendo foundation.

In addition, the dining area has been revamped with new guests such as Los Panchos, chef Carlos Gaytán, the first Mexican to receive a Michelin star, and even Cuervo will offer new cocktails. In addition to restaurants that have already been part of the event, such as Fisher’s, attendees will be able to enjoy high-quality local and international cuisine within the complex.

To close the tournament, the organization is offering a closing concert with the group Moenia, which is part of its #EstamosBienTour.

Frances Tiafoe, one of the favorites of the Mexican public, returns to Acapulco for the eighth time

  • This Tuesday, January 20, the Maryland-born tennis player turns 28. He is a player known for combining sports with community service.
  • His coach for the 2026 season will be American Todd Martin.

Mexico City, January 19, 2026.- The “Big Foe” will return once again to the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC, marking his eighth appearance at the Acapulco tournament, at the height and maturity of his career as a professional tennis player, but also dedicating sufficient time to the altruistic activities that characterize him.

At 28 years old, which he turns on January 20, and having become one of the best American tennis players today, we will see Frances Tiafoe once again in Mexico, where he has given us his charisma and demonstrated his human qualities.

Tiafoe is a player who combines sports with supporting and serving his community through altruistic activities, such as the one he organized last Christmas, where he hosted a gathering at the Adventist Community Center in Beltsville, Maryland.

Together with his girlfriend, fellow tennis player Ayan Broomfield, they decided to organize a bazaar with community donations for those who needed a little support during the holiday season.

One of the darlings of the Mexican public

Without a doubt, Tiafoe is one of the most eagerly awaited players at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC by Mexican fans, because he combines his unique style on the court, his athleticism, his charisma, and his connection with the public.

“Big Foe” is a regular guest in Acapulco. He first participated in the Mexican tournament in 2017, becoming one of the favorites and darlings of the competition from the very beginning.

A new season

Tiafoe’s 2026 campaign began a few days ago at the ATP 250 in Brisbane, Australia. In the first round, he defeated local player Aleksandar Vukic, but in the second round, he lost to Russia’s Daniil Medvedev. Now, he will be looking to perform well in the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open.

In 2025, Tiafoe performed well on clay, his favorite surface, reaching the final of the ATP tournament in Houston, which he lost. He also made it to the quarterfinals of Roland Garros, losing at that stage to Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti. However, he lacked consistency on other surfaces, a situation he will seek to reverse in the upcoming season, where he will aim to win his fourth trophy on the ATP Tour.

A new beginning for Tiafoe

At the end of last year, Frances Tiafoe made two important changes to his team. After a year, American David Witt stepped down as his coach, and former Argentine tennis player Jordi Arconada also left the team after five years of working with the Maryland native.

His new coach for the 2026 season will be American Todd Martin.

Flavio Cobolli: almost a soccer player and tattoo lover

  • The young Italian talent turned pro in 2020 and his greatest achievement is winning the Davis Cup with his country
  • He started 2026 with an epic victory over three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka in the United Cup, a team competition

Mexico City, January 12, 2026.- Italy’s No. 3 player, behind Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti, begins 2026 motivated to take his first steps on the road to consolidation on the circuit and with the goal of adding more ATP titles.

Although he had already played in a final in 2024 (Washington), 2025 has been the strongest season of Cobolli’s short career, as he won his first two titles (Tiriac and Hamburg). Both were on clay, his specialty surface.

He also surprised everyone by reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and taking a set off his idol, Novak Djokovic. Despite the defeat, his adventure at the Cathedral of Tennis earned him a place in the Top 20 of the ATP Rankings. In November, he became the Hulk with his celebration of the Italian Davis Cup three-peat, and although it is a team title, it is the most significant in his record, followed by the ATP 500 in Hamburg.

With this background, the 2026 season looks promising for Cobolli, but beyond the statistics and numbers, what else is known about the young Italian who was invited to the Laver Cup last year?

As a child, he trained at the AS Roma youth soccer academy, but in the end, with a father who was a professional player, Stefano Cobolli, and who is now his coach, he decided to take up tennis. “I played more soccer than tennis, then there came a time when I had to choose. I listened to my instincts, and today I am very proud of the decision I made.” Of course, he is a loyal fan of the capital’s team.

He also has a particular fondness for tattoos, saying that he likes to have his body painted without much thought. Some of the tattoos that can be seen during his matches on the ATP Tour are: “Go for victory” (in Italian), “brave” and “passion” (in Chinese), the wolf of Rome, and the symbol of Florence.

As a true Italian, Cobolli says his favorite tournament is the Masters 1000 in Rome, while the ATP 500 in Acapulco may be on his list of favorite tournaments as he returns for the third consecutive year to the Mexican tournament in search of advancing beyond the round of 16, where he has been eliminated in previous years.
