Grigor Dimitrov debutes in hard surface as a champion in Acapulco

  • Grigor Dimitrov broke the Spanish hegemony in the AMT in 2014 by becoming the first champion on hard surface in Acapulco.

Mexico City, January 23rd, 2023.- After eight titles for the Spaniards in a 10 year spam period and six of them being consecutive, this 22-year-old arrived to put a stop to the sweeping winning streak of David Ferrer, Rafael Nadal and Nicolás Almagro, to proudly wave the colors of the Bulgarian flag in the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC, celebrating one of its biggest changes, switching from clay to hard court, under the slogan ‘A new court for a new era’.

Grigor Dimitrov, then world No. 22, could not have dreamed of a better debut in Acapulco. Reaching the final, where he faced South Africa’s Kevin Anderson, surprising everyone leaving the current Olympic champion and Grand Slam winner Andy Murray on the way, but perhaps it was the atmosphere that was his best ally.

“My first memory of Acapulco is from the first time I played there and I had an amazing time with the people and everyone who made the tournament. It was very special in the sense that I was playing every match at 10 o’clock at night and the fans were attending and were present on every point played. Without a doubt my memories take me to the atmosphere and I will never forget that I had one of my craziest points, craziest parties, basically crazy everything over there, it’s very different and I really appreciate that as a player. What a beautiful place! Stated for the tournament.

That final against Anderson had all the ingredients to be remembered as a historic one, as the drama was not lacking in a 7-6(1), 3-6, 7-6(5) score for almost 3 hours (two hours and 58 minutes) of play. It was the second title in Dimitrov’s career, but his first ATP 500. He now totals eight in total, among which he boasts having conquered the ATP Finals in 2017, the same year in which he reached his highest ranking as No. 3 in the world.

At almost the same age as the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC, Dimitrov reflects on the special anniversary and reveals the details that make the tournament so special “It means a lot. These days when we see how everything is done, it’s quite challenging, but reaching 30 years is reaching an incredible goal, with such good emotions all around. It gives me pleasure to know that the tournament has improved and for a good reason it always has amazing players.”

“What I like most about the destination is that it was very accessible for us and at the same time it was great to be close to the water. Also that the matches began much later in the day really helped a lot, you enjoy everything in general, it’s beautiful and that makes it easy for the players to enjoy and incorporate everything they have for their game.”

Finally, Grigor Dimitrov can’t forget the fans, the most special ingredient he´s had in each of his visits to Mexico “They have been tremendous over the years, it´s been a privilege and an honor to be there and support them in giving everything every time. I’m very pleased that I know I can count on them, throughout the night they are so active and show so much, it’s amazing!” concluded the now 31-year-old world No. 28.

Nadal wins in acapulco again

  • Rafa won his fourth title of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC
  • Nadal surpassed his own record and broke other records in Acapulco

Acapulco, February 26th, 2022. – The new champion of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC is an old acquaintance. Rafael Nadal defeated Cameron Norrie by a double 6-4 and secure his fourth title of the tournament, 17 years after his first title in Acapulco.

Cameron Norrie did everything he could and competed to match what would have been his first ATP 500. But when Rafa had opportunities to break, he showed his best version and put the Brit in trouble.

Nadal was aggressive in decisive moments. He also knew how to take advantage whenever Norrie opened a window to improve the scoreboard. The first 6-4 reflected how close the first set had been.

Rafa advanced even further in the second set despite losing his serve on one occasion. He managed to get 5-2 and serve for the championship, but Norrie bought himself extra time to prolong the final two more games.

The Spaniard used his great technique in the court to get out of some trouble, especially in the 30-15 final. So he got two match points but only needed the first to become champion.

Rafael Nadal became the third tetrachampion of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC after Thomas Muster and David Ferrer. In addition, he surpassed his own record as the longest champion, which he had established back in 2020.

Renata burillo leads the new era of the AMT

  • The president of the Board of Directors of Mextenis explores the new venue
  • She assures that the Stadium has met all expectations when it comes to the magnitude and architecture

One of the biggest dreams for the president of the Board of Directors of MexTenis was fulfilled: The Arena GNP Seguros was finally inaugurated. Renata Burillo enjoys the beginning of a new era in the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC “Seeing it finished made me feel a lot of excitement. It never ceases to surprise me. The truth is that I still continue to explore more areas. It is not the same to plan and project an idea, than to live them with people and all activities.”

Renata confessed that she is excited to explore the new venue little by little, she also had the opportunity to talk to fans and has received good comments “Everyone was very impressed by the size of the stadium! The venue is intended that, from the main entrance, everything else feels in harmony, and we think the people have had that feeling. Beautiful courts, walkable distances, there are more bathrooms, more bars. The experience is better. We’re exploring new things. I’m still in shock. I’m still looking for the best way to get to my office, for example. I’m in no hurry to discover and live the new venue.”

On the other hand, she recalled the reason behind a new venue “Part of the desire we had to change headquarters was to offer more content, more entertainment, more experiences to the public. Before, the space we had was very limited. However, we were facing the sea in the previous stadium, now we aren’t, and we believed that was going to be a great loss, but from my point of view, being on the golf course made us remember nature. We respect the trees that were there and that integrated the area”.

Burillo was also impressed by the historic opening day of the venue with a new record “It is incredible, you think you’ve seen everything and when you least expect it, there are surprises. It’s part of the live entertainment, it was very special. People didn’t leave the stadium that morning”.

Finally, with the return of Rafa Nadal, with a historical draw, and with the presence of the best talent of the Top 10 in Acapulco, Renata highlighted Nadal’s presence and said that she is not ready for the outcome of the Big Three.

“I think it is still very difficult to overcome. They’re off the charts, even when we’re already focused on new generations, something like Australia happens. I love what is happening with the younger ones but there are many things missing to compare from the veterans. When the Big Three had the age of many of these younger players, they had already accomplished a lot. I love the effort that the ATP has made to promote new generations, I think it is very important because we cannot stay with one, two or three players, we are human, and careers have an end”.
