Last year in Acapulco, he said goodbye in the first round; however, for this 2025 he will seek to surpass his best performance so far in the Mexican tournament, which was reaching the final in 2020, where he lost to Spain’s Rafael Nadal.

Holger Rune and his friendship with Alcaraz

  • The 21-year-old Dane went through a 2024 season of ups and downs and with more changes in his team, but because of his talent he is still called to be one of the great stars of the future of world tennis.
  • Alongside Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and even Ben Shelton, they represent the great generation of the 2000s

Mexico City, October 29, 2024.- Only six days separate them by age. Holger Rune and Carlos Alcaraz were born in 2003 and in search of the same tennis dream, they have shared the same path since a very from a very young age. “I hope to be like Roger and Rafa… That’s what we’re looking for, to be the best players of all time and be the best players of all time and be the best we can be,” the Dane when he was just taking his first firm steps on the circuit.

Viral videos and photos have gone viral of two child tennis players playing doubles at the Le Petit Ace in 2017. It was only 7 years ago, but the change both physically, and in quality has been evident. More rivals than ever, the friendship does not seem to have been lost, as in a recent interview with the sons of Mexican Santiago Gonzalez, Holger Rune confessed that while many of his best friends are in his many of his best friends are in his native Denmark, on the tour he considers himself to have a friendships with Alcaraz, Lorenzo Musetti and Luca Nardi.

Three decades later the Shelton namelooks to shine in Mexico.

  • Ben Shelton’s father was champion of the 1994 Mexican Tennis Open in the doubles tournament.

Thirty years ago, a tennis player with the last name Shelton was proclaimed champion in Mexico. It was Bryan Shelton, father of the young American tennis player Ben Shelton, who in 2025 will try to lift the title of the Abierto Mexicano de Tenis presented by HSBC and become the second member of his family to win in Mexico.

Bryan Shelton was doubles champion in that second edition of the tournament in 1994, teaming up with fellow American Francisco Montana at the Club Alemán in Mexico City.

Three decades later, Ben Shelton, who has his father as his coach, will be looking to get past the quarterfinals in Acapulco, his best round in this tournament so far.

Last year, Shelton had a good start in Mexico by beating the British Daniel Evans in the first round, then he faced the Italian Matteo Arnaldi and was victorious; however, in the third round he lost to the runner-up, the Norwegian Casper Ruud.

In this 2024, Shelton has a record of 35 wins and 22 losses, including a title at the ATP 250 in Houston, Texas, last April. A semifinal at the ATP 500 in Washington in July and quarterfinals at the Cincinnati Masters.

His current position in the PIF ATP Rankings is the sixteenth position, being the third best in the world.

Alex de Miñaur becomes two-time champion of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC.

  • “It’s fantastic to be able to give a little bit of light to this fantastic city, I’m sure Acapulco will shine stronger than ever… Acapulco is already my second city,” said the Australian tennis player.
  • De Miñaur added the eighth championship of his career, seven of them on hard court

Acapulco, March 3, 2024 – After 12 long years, the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC has a new two-time champion as Australian Alex de Miñaur was crowned for the second consecutive year after defeating Norwegian Casper Ruud 6-4, 6-4.

The match was a complete spectacle from start to finish with De Minaur pressing and attacking over the net and an aggressive strategy from the first set to physically demand his opponent, breaking his serve in the first set and taking advantage of five unforced errors by the Norwegian.

In the second set. Casper tried to come back taking advantage of the three unforced errors made by Alex at the beginning of the game and a couple of double faults in his serve; however, the Australian recovered and came from behind to take the set and the victory.

With this triumph, Alex became the fourth player in the history of the tournament to win a two-time championship, joining the feats of Austrian Thomas Muster when the tournament was still played in Mexico City (winning the 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996 editions), Spaniard Nicolas Almagro (winner of the 2008 and 2009 editions already in Acapulco) and David Ferrer (three-time champion in 2010, 2011 and 2012).

“I want to thank the people who have made this tournament possible, all the fans and the city that has suffered in recent months. It’s fantastic to be able to give a little bit of light to this fantastic city, I’m sure Acapulco will shine stronger than ever… Acapulco is already my second city,” commented De Miñaur after receiving the champion’s trophy.

The Australian reached the eighth championship of his career, seven of them on hard court and two of them on Acapulco’s court, and warned that he will return in 2025 to try to defend his title and seek the tri-championship.

At the awards ceremony, the audience chanted the name of Acapulco for several seconds and applauded the effort made by the city and the organization to make the tournament possible 129 days after the passage of Hurricane Otis.

Casper Ruud also expressed his gratitude for these two weeks in Mexico, first at Los Cabos Open and later in Acapulco where he demonstrated the quality he has as a tennis player, reaching the final in both tournaments.

“It has been a fantastic two weeks in Mexico, I am grateful to the public, the organization and the players who competed at a very high level. The tennis is fantastic, the message is one of total support for all the people of Acapulco and we are all very happy to have participated and looking forward to returning as always,” said the Norwegian.

The champion’s trophy was awarded to Marcela Velasco Cámara, Telcel’s Corporate Marketing Director, while the second place trophy was presented by Jorge Arturo Arce Gama, General Director of HSBC Mexico.

Also present at the closing ceremony were Alvaro Falla, Director of Mextenis, Renata Burillo, President of the Board of Directors of Mextenis and Grupo Pegaso, as well as Geoffrey Fernandez, Director of Operations of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC. Also present was Ali Nani, supervisor of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).

Nys and Zielinski, AMT 2024 Doubles champions

  • They beat Santiago Gonzalez and Neal Skupski in two sets.
  • They dominated the final despite Santi’s locality in Acapulco.

Acapulco, March 2, 2024.- The Monegasque Hugo Nys and the Polish Jan Zielinski were proclaimed champions of the doubles tournament of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC, which took place in the hard courts of the tennis complex of the GNP Arena.

Nys and Zielinski did not give any chance to the duo formed by the Mexican Santiago Gonzalez and the British Neil Skupsky, despite the locality enjoyed by the player from Veracruz and his partner during the whole tournament, to subdue them by 6-3, 6-2 in just one hour and nine minutes of match.

As reflected in the scoreboard, the now champions clearly did things better against opponents who, except for a moment in the first set, failed to settle in the center court and ended up being clearly outclassed.

Santi, finalists for the second time in Acapulco, had arrived with many illusions to Saturday’s final, without dropping a single set throughout the tournament, however, they were powerless against Nys and Zielinski, who were a gale from start to finish.

Nys and Zielinski started with a very good rhythm, to take a 3-0 lead in the first set with a break to Gonzalez. However, the rivals reacted with the support of the crowd to equalize at three games apiece, in what was their only important moment of the match.

Again, Nys and Zielinski took control of the actions and stepped on the accelerator to win the set 6-3, being clear dominators of the match.

In the second set, there was not the reaction that the fans expected from their favorite players. If in the first set, the game was one-sided, in the second the dominance was more overwhelming to quickly define the match with a 6-2 score, without showing a crack through which their opponents could sneak through.

“I am very happy to be in the final after nine years. I want to congratulate Jan [Zielinski] and Hugo [Nys] for their title, they played very well, they were better than us. I wish them the best of luck for the next tournaments. I thank Neal [Skuoski], I hope next year will be the good one. We will be back next year in Acapulco,” said Gonzalez at the conclusion of the game.

For Skupski it was certainly not the night he was expecting, but in general terms he acknowledged that it was a great experience for him this week in Acapulco, hoping to consolidate his on-court partnership with the Mexican in upcoming tournaments.

On the winning side, Hugo Nys was very happy for the title. “I feel very proud, we had a solid game all week,” he said.

Meanwhile, Zielinski highlighted the importance of this fourth title together and was optimistic to face the calendar throughout the season and, especially, the next few weeks, which includes Masters in Indian Wells and Miami.
